Geiranger village is located along the picturesque snow-covered Geirangerfjord in central Norway. One of the most dazzling of all Norwegian fjords, the Geiranger has been visited by touring ships for more than 100 years. One of the highlights of the fjordland, tiny Hellesylt lies at the head of Sunnylvenfjord. Near the village, a glacier-fed stream plunges over the sheer granite face of the fjord, cascading in thousands of feet of rainbows and foam. This majestic area, with its breathtaking glaciers and mountain lakes, inspired Henrik Ibsen's immortal drama Brand. |

Alta’s claim to fame is its tippy-top, northerly location: It is the world’s northernmost city with a population of more than 10,000 people. This Norwegian town has other impressive attributes, most notably its scenery. The Sautso canyon, carved by the river Altaelva, is one of the largest gorges in Europe, while the Altafjorden with its numerous fjord arms, including Langfjorden and Lille Kufjorden, contributes to the region’s reputation as having some of the world’s most beautiful scenery. Southwest of Alta are the prehistoric rock carvings at Hjemmeluft. Dating from 2,000 to 5,000 years ago, these Stone-Age rock incisions depicting hunting scenes, fertility symbols and animals such as bears and moose are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tromso, the capital of Troms province is known as "the capital of the Arctic." It lies on a forest-covered island in a narrow waterway, hemmed in by steep mountains and connected to the mainland by a bridge. This city has long been renowned as an important center of science and exploration. The imaginative Arctic Cathedral, the Polaria Centre and a scenic cable car ride are among the varied attractions Tromso offers to its visitors.
| Jul 22, Tuesday | Leknes/Lofoten, Norway » | 8 am | 1 pm |

|
Because Leknes is not a fishing outpost like its neighboring towns, the city might, at first, seem to lack the same old-fashioned charm. But what it does possess is some of the most spectacular scenery in Norway, and perhaps the world. The surrounding mountains and cliffs are awe-inspiring and the perfect setting for hiking, climbing or cycling. A popular attraction is the old schoolhouse in the Fygle neighborhood, which gives visitors a taste of the area’s history and culture. Local shops offer an array of unique goods and souvenirs that capture the spirit of this beautiful port.

Charmingly eccentric-that is how the Norwegian town of Alesund is often described. What makes Alesund so unusual is its architecture. The town center boasts a somewhat outrageous collection of pastel-colored buildings, many with towers and turrets. Not so unusual, perhaps, except for the fanciful flourishes of human faces, pharaohs and dragons that peer down upon fascinated passersby. The story of how these strange and altogether delightful buildings came to be is as remarkable as the structures themselves. In 1904, a fire consumed the town center and left 10,000 people without homes. Undaunted, the citizens saw an opportunity to re-imagine their city. Local architects, trained in Germany, helped rebuild the town in a surge of reconstruction lasting three years. The influence is certainly that of the Jugendstil movement. The style most closely resembles Art Nouveau. The result: uncommonly wonderful. |

Bergen, "Capital of the Fjordland" and Norway's second-largest city, was founded in 1070 AD. In its heyday, Norwegian Kings resided here. It was the largest city in Norway and there were no less than 27 churches and abbeys. Bergen is an immaculate city, set between the mountains and the sea, where traditional values hold firm over transitory ways. The local people take great pride in the rich heritage of this, one of Norway's premier cities. |

Along the waterfront, in the silent Christiansholm fortress, and the charming houses of the historic center, you’ll find a peaceful serenity.

Skagen (pronounced Skain), has a long list of distinct characteristics. First and foremost is its location. Positioned on the Grenen headlands at the very tippy top of the Jutland peninsula, Skagen is the northernmost point of Denmark. Off these shores the turbulent waters of the North and Baltic seas meet, making for treacherous shipping navigation. To help solve the issue, one of Denmark’s earliest lighthouses was built here. For land-based visitors, watching the two oceans’ waves crash together is not only quite safe but fascinating. Other unique Skagen characteristics include yellow houses with white trim and red-tiled roofs; ever-shifting sand dunes that give the coast a wild and rugged appearance; and the legacy of the Skagen Painters, a group of 19th-century Scandinavian artists who came to this spot to paint, write, philosophize and, like you, simply enjoy the scenery. |
