Newcastle upon Tyne, England » 11 am 7 pm

Formerly a coal town, Newcastle Upon Tyne is today a hip and trendy destination, reinventing itself after the heady days of full-steam-ahead industrialization screeched to the near standstill of recession. “Geordies,” as the locals are known, give Newcastle a distinct character—and a practically indecipherable dialect.  The tough life of the Geordies has imbued in them, somewhat surprisingly, the gift of optimism, one they share willingly and generously. The people are one wonderful draw of the area; another is the Northumberland coast and Pennine hills, home to some of England’s loveliest scenery and ruins of Hadrian’s Wall. For all the appeal of the land, you may find it hard to leave the city, with its famed suspended-deck Tyne Bridge, graceful Victorian Central Arcade and charming Grainger Town, the beautiful and historic heart of the city.

Aug 27, Thursday
Hamburg, Germany (overnight) » 8 pm*
Hamburg is often called the Green City. In fact, as much as 22% of the cityscape is graced with historic gardens and inviting parks. If such land-bound beauty and its associated recreation is not enough, Hamburg is also a water city, boasting a location on the Alster and Elbe, with a network of waterways and bridges that rivals Venice. Indeed, 8% of the city is water, and Hamburg has more bridges than the famed Italian city. Few places in the world offer sailing and boating in the middle of town. Add first-rate shopping, world-class theatrical and musical events, and historic architecture, and you have a truly extraordinary city with innumerable ways to pass the time.

Aug 29, Saturday
  Helgoland, Germany » 8 am 4 pm
Looking like the white Cliffs of Dover, and indeed sharing some geological characteristics with them, the cliffs of Helgoland (or Heligoland) are a remarkable sight, rising abruptly from the North Sea, 60 miles off the German mainland. One appreciable difference between the Germanic cliffs and their English counterparts is their rusty red color,  resembling the walls of the Grand Canyon. As for size, “grand” is not a word to be applied to Heligoland. The entire  archipelago is tiny, a few square miles made up of dunes and turf-topped sandstone and consists of the main island and the Dune, a smaller island that functions as an airstrip.   Due to an absence of motorized vehicles, the island is quiet except for the sounds of residents catching up on local gossip in a nearby café, or the barking of other locals — seals lolling about in the sun.
Aug 30, Sunday

Many of its wondrous highlights are located within the five concentric canals that gird the city's older neighborhoods and business districts.
