He co-authored two volumes; Mesoamerican Voices and Invading Guatemala – in Penn State Press’ Latin American Originals series, of which he is editor. His most recent works are 2012 and the End of the World: The Western Roots of the Maya Apocalypse, The Riddle of Latin America, Latin America in Colonial Times, and The Conquistadors. Matthew earned his BA in Modern History at Oxford University and his MA in Latin American History and PhD in Colonial Mexican History at UCLA. He has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

Special Interest Lecturer

Thomas Eastwood (Estero, FL)
Thomas Eastwood retired as Director of the IRS Michigan District where he managed over 1500 employees and all district activities including criminal investigation, audit, collection, taxpayer service, and administration. He previously served as Director in Milwaukee, Louisville, and Fargo, Dean of the IRS School of Professional Development in Washington, and Assistant Director in Manhattan and Indianapolis. He was a member of the US government’s Senior Executive Service (SES).

He began his law enforcement career with the US Treasury’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) before transferring as a special agent and later executive with the Department of Defense (DoD) where for 15 years he conducted and led counterintelligence and criminal investigations. His accomplishments include being the youngest DoD Regional Director in history and completing a two-year detail protecting President Carter’s National Security Advisor during a national crisis. He tested and developed interrogation and interview techniques now used by most US agencies. He was also an adjunct professor at the Defense Security Institute where he specialized in investigative and interrogation tactics. He is the recipient of the Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Award and many other awards for exceptional performance as both a special agent and executive.

Prior to his 27 years in law enforcement he was a psychologist. He holds a BS in biology, a MA in psychology, and he has done work toward a PhD. He has been trained by and worked joint investigations with many agencies including ATF, CIA, DEA, DoJ, FBI, IRS, Secret Service, and US military and foreign intelligence agencies. One of the youngest IRS executives ever to retire, he now resides in Florida where he is a public speaker and university lecturer. Candid and willing to express his opinions, he likes helping people avoid difficulty with the most misunderstood, feared, and loathed US agency – the IRS. He also speaks on counterintelligence topics – especially espionage and interrogations.
