Nov 10, Thursday
Turks & Caicos/Grand Turk, UK » 8 am 4 pm
Although there are numerous spots on land that invite relaxation and exploration, the Turks and Caicos are really all about the water. More specifically, they're all about what's beneath the water. These islands have some of the best diving and snorkeling anywhere, courtesy of one of the world's largest network of coral reefs, easily accessible off the islands' shores. One reef, aptly called the Wall, is particularly spectacular; it drops 7,000 feet-straight down. Between the shore and the reef, the water is only waist deep, providing a perfect place for beginning snorkelers to get their feet wet.
Nov 11, Friday
Samaná, Dominican Republic » 8 am 5 pm

The name of a peninsula, a city and the picturesque bay on which it sits, Samaná has all the picture-postcard qualities you expect of a Caribbean locale: white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, swaying palm trees, lush mountains, tumbling waterfalls, chatty parrots, and colorful colonial buildings. Founded by Spanish governor Francisco Rubio y Peñaranda in 1756, Samaná (more formally known as Santa Bárbara de Samaná) has a distinctly Spanish feel to it, peppered with a broader European flair, including French and Italian influences. It is said that Samaná is the real Caribbean, at least the one of 40 years ago, a time when things were a little quieter, a little simpler. The main draw to the area, at least mid-January through mid-March, is simple enough—it is the North Atlantic humpback whale, which annually migrate to these warm waters to the great delight of bipedal observers. Year round, visitors enjoy lolling in hammocks and walking along the seaside promenade, called the Malecón.

Nov 12, Saturday
Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands » 10 am 8 pm

Like grains of sand that collect to make a blissful stretch of beach, Virgin Gorda boasts an assortment of gems that make it a top vacation destination. First is its relative non-commercialism. Though located amid popular “saints” such as St. Thomas, St. Martin and St. Barts, Virgin Gorda has managed to keep a low profile, with its eight square miles home to only a smattering of villas and a few resorts. Second are its ties to two famous people: Christopher Columbus, who named the island for its resemblance to a reclining woman with an ample belly, and business mogul Richard Branson, who owns his own private island offshore. Third, and most obvious, is Virgin Gorda’s Caribbean setting. Turquoise waters ideal for snorkeling and swimming are, of course, plentiful. More unusual are the Baths, an area of enormous boulders and rock formations that create remarkable scenery and wonderful grottoes for clambering and investigating.

Nov 13, Sunday
St. Barts/Gustavia, French West Indies » 7 am 11 pm
St. Barts forms part of the French Overseas Region of Guadeloupe. Descendants of settlers from Brittany and Normandy operate its tiny inns, shops and restaurants. This charming, slow-paced island attracts tourists year-round to its shores. The graceful meadows surrounded by low stone fences, spectacular beaches, the small volcanic mountains and the quaint Creole-style villages are just several of the alluring aspects of this tranquil island.
Nov 14, Monday
Guadeloupe/Terra de Haut, French West Indies » 9 am 7 pm
Translating to “Land of High,” Terre-de-Haute is indeed positioned above its neighoring Île de Saintes, Terre-de-Bas. Terre-de-Haute also rises to the top of vacation hotspots thanks to a magical combination of Caribbean locale and French joie de vivre. Small at about three miles long and one-and-a-half miles wide, the island is big in international sailing, with yachts and other vessels—including your own—glamorous and glinting in the harbor. Trekking on land, you will encounter colorful, tile-roofed buildings housing all manner of eateries and shops, spiced with a French-Creole culture and mellowed with a sun-warmed vibe. A primary island attraction is Fort Napoléon, built on a bluff as a defensive structure and later used as a prison. Today, it houses a museum dedicated to the island’s history and environment and boasts a botanical garden of succulents.

Nov 16, Wednesday
Bonaire/Kralendijk, Netherlands Antilles » 7 am 5 pm

The "B" of Netherlands Antilles' ABC islands (with Aruba and Curaçao), Bonaire is the easternmost of the three. A small island – but at 112 square miles the middle-sized of the ABCs – and generally flat, it features some of the best beaches in the Antilles, huge wildlife reserve areas and year-round sunshine.

The charming beachside town of Kralendijk fits snugly into the leeward curve of the island. This capital of Bonaire features the ABC islands' signature pastel-colored buildings and old Dutch homes, reminders of the "home country." Sights include a colorful boat harbor and fish market, historical Fort Orange, the Old Fort museum, jewelry and duty-free shops, plus a pretty main square shaded by mimosa trees and surrounded by brightly colored flowers.

New Orleans, Louisiana, USA (overnight) » 3 pm
Sitting astride the great Mississippi River, rising ever so slightly from the first high ground above its mouth, the city of New Orleans commands the river-borne bounty of the vast North American interior. Both the Indian traders who originally occupied the area and the European explorers who came later quickly recognized its obvious commercial and strategic value. The invention of the cotton gin, the arrival of the steamboat and the rapid expansion of the United States combined to place New Orleans at the center of a regional economic boom.
