Destination Lecturer

Ken Rees (Bristol, England)
Ken Rees brings to the role of destination lecturer over 25 years experience as a world-travelling foreign correspondent. During his career, he has reported extensively from Italy, Greece, and the Middle East. His many news credits include the Lebanese civil war, the first Gulf War, the loss of the space shuttle Challenger, and the sectarian troubles of Northern Ireland. Ken has held almost every job in a television newsroom from scriptwriter, news editor, and reporter to Director of News and Current Affairs. During a 15-year career with Britain’s flagship network program, ITN’s News at Ten, he served as a Senior Foreign Correspondent and spent six years covering the United States from Washington, D.C. In 1986 the Royal Television Society named Ken as Television Reporter of the Year, their highest honor. He now works as a broadcast consultant, trains journalists for TV companies, and writes on travel and world affairs.

Special Interest Lecturer

Frank Summers (Baltimore, MD)
Dr. Frank Summers is an astrophysicist working in public outreach for the Hubble Space Telescope. His charge is to explain and elucidate Hubble images and science to the public through news media, web sites, educational programs, museums, books, television, and film. He specializes in ‘cinematic scientific visualizations’ – combining research data with Hollywood software to create movie sequences that are both accurate and aesthetic. Of note, his work can be seen at New York’s Hayden Planetarium, in his solar system DVD lectures from “The Great Courses” and in the IMAX films Cosmic Voyage and Hubble 3D.

*Theme Presentations: Photography

Theme Lecturer

Neil Leifer (New York, NY)
When the London Observer listed the 50 greatest sporting images of all time, photographs by Neil Leifer ranked first and second. Now principally a producer and director of documentaries and short films, his pictures have appeared in every major magazine, including LIFE, Time, and Sports Illustrated. His 15 books include Sports, hailed by many as the best of its kind, and The Best of Leifer, a collection of forty years of pictures. He has photographed Olympics, World Cups, Kentucky Derbies, World Series, and Superbowls; every important heavyweight fight since 1959; and his favorite subject, Muhammad Ali, on almost 70 occasions.

Theme Lecturer

Colin Prior (Lanarkshire, Scotland)
Colin Prior is known as one of the world’s most respected landscape photographers. Born in Glasgow, his proximity to the Scottish Highlands shaped his passion for the outdoors and fostered his interest in photography. His photographs capture sublime moments of light and land, which are the result of meticulous planning and preparation and often take years to achieve. Prior is a photographer who seeks out patterns in the landscape and the hidden links between reality and the imagination.

Commissioned by British Airways for four years, he has travelled to over forty countries throughout the world and lived alone for extended periods of time in the wild just to understand his subject. His six books include The World’s Wild Places, which was published internationally. He is currently working on a 25 year retrospective and is about to begin a four year project in the Karakoram Mountains of Pakistan. He is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, and a founding member of the International League of Conservation Photographers.
