Historian Douglas Brinkley has written of Walsh: "No journalist today covers U.S. presidential politics with the same bedrock self-assurance, analytical thought, and literary aplomb as Ken Walsh."

Ford Prize for Distinguished Coverage of the Presidency in 1992, 1998, and 2009, and the Aldo Beckman Award in 1991 and 2007. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Washington Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in 2009. He is former president of the White House Correspondents' Association. A New York City native, Walsh received a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1968 from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and a master's in communication in 1970 from American University in Washington, D.C.
