Jim Rowe (Sabanilla, Costa Rica)
Dr. Jim Rowe is a cultural anthropologist with years of experience traveling and teaching about the unique culture and nature of Oceania, South Pacific and Southeast Asia. Jim’s passion for the islands of the South Pacific, Australia and Asia began in the 1980s when he earned his undergraduate degree in a multi-cultural setting in Hawaii. He focused on cultural anthropology and natural history of Polynesia, Micronesia, Latin America and South East Asia as he fell in love with tropical regions. Since that time he has lived, traveled and worked several in tropical environments including South East Asia, Polynesia, Oceania and Latin America. Jim actively teaches university level study abroad courses in tropical ecology and cultural anthropology with Outward Bound. He is the Executive Director of Outward Bound in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama where he oversees programs for young people focusing on personal development through adventure. In his personal time, Jim enjoys white water kayaking, surfing, SCUBA diving, parapenting, rafting, climbing and wakeboarding. His presentations onboard focus on Culture and Nature of Australia, Indonesia, and the South Pacific.

Sir Stephen Brown (Ilkley, England)
Stephen Brown was born in 1945 in Leeds. After leaving school he served for 10 years with the Royal Artillery in Germany, Northern Ireland and Oman. During this time, he read Asian and African history at Sussex University. In 1976 he joined the Diplomatic Service. His first postings were to Nicosia and Paris. Returning to the FCO in 1984, he dealt with Mexico, Cuba and Central America. In 1989, after a short period in the Department of Trade & Industry, he was appointed British Consul-General in Melbourne. This was the start of over a decade of service in the Asia-Pacific region. In 1994 he was appointed Director of Trade Promotion at the British Embassy in Beijing. Over the next 3 years he played a key role in strengthening the UK’s diplomatic and trade presence in China.

Appointed Ambassador to The Republic of Korea in 1997, he was involved in helping Korea overcome the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997 and then in supporting President Kim Dae-jung’s “Sunshine Policy” towards North Korea. After leaving Seoul, he helped negotiate diplomatic relations between the UK and North Korea. He was High Commissioner to Singapore from 2001 – 2002 before becoming Chief Executive of UK Trade & Investment. Much of his time was spent assisting UK companies do business with Asia and in attracting inward investment to the UK. Sir Stephen is currently Co-Chairman of ADRg Ambassadors, a corporate diplomacy and dispute resolution partnership. He is also an advisor to Vermilion Partners, a strategic advisory company working in China. He assumes the Chair of The (UK-Australia) Cook Society in 2013 and is on the committee of the Anglo-Korean Society.

Dr. Sylvia Rimm (Sheffield Lake, OH)

Dr. Rimm’s nine years as a contributor to the Today Show, and as a favorite personality on public radio, make her a familiar child psychologist to many audiences.

Dr. Rimm is director of the Family Achievement Clinic in Cleveland and a clinical professor at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine. She has authored many books including How to Parent So Children Will Learn, Why Bright Kids Get Poor Grades, Keys to Parenting the Gifted Child, and Growing Up Too Fast. See Jane Win: The Rimm Report on How 1,000 Girls Became Successful Women was a New York Times best seller and was featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show and in People magazine. Her book Rescuing the Emotional Lives of Overweight Children was a finalist for the Books for a Better Life Award.

In her nationally syndicated parenting column, Dr. Rimm answers hundreds of letters each year from parents and grandparents. She speaks and publishes internationally on family and school approaches to guiding children toward achievement, parenting, and the lives of teenagers. She is a dynamic speaker who fascinates audiences, speaking on many topics, tailoring her talks to the special themes of the audience and spicing those talks with humor. 

Special Interest Lecturer: Professor of Political and International Relations

Robert Schrire (Cape Town, South Africa)
Robert Schrire was, until recently, chair and professor in the politics department at the University of Cape Town and the Director of the Institute for the Study of Public Policy. He also teaches at Princeton University. His presentations look at how our world is being impacted by changes in politics, religion, technology, economics, and population. Robert is best known as the original host of the television program Talking Politics and he had a regular column in The Sunday Times for several years. Much in demand as a public commentator, his views have been published in Time, Newsweek, The Economist, and The Washington Post. The BBC's chief analyst during South Africa's first democratic elections, he has worked closely with many prominent TV personalities including Ted Koppel and David Dimbleby. A consultant to UNESCO and the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations, Robert presents a highly-acclaimed series to CEOs of major corporations, entitled "Our Changing World: Thinking about the Future” and has led study tours for groups as diverse as the National Trust and Harvard and Stanford Universities. A graduate of the University of Cape Town, Robert pursued post-graduate studies at Columbia University and the School of International Service – American University in Washington, D.C., and holds a doctorate from the University of California.

Jon Ashton (Chicago, IL)
Jon worked in several noted restaurants including the Derby Lodge Hotel's French restaurant and as Sous Chef at The Kirkfield Hotel's restaurant. Jon's success and flair in the kitchen soon gave way to appearances on British cooking shows including the nationally syndicated TV Dinners. Upon landing in America, he produced his own TV show, airing in Disney's town of Celebration, which led to a position as the regular mid-day chef at Orlando's FOX affiliate station. After appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the Today Show, he became the food correspondent of the nationally syndicated Morning Show The Daily Buzz and the in-house Chef for Relish magazine. Jon can be seen on ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX affiliates across the nation as he travels doing media tours and presentations.

Heinz von Holzen planned a career in engineering and it was lack of apprentice positions that he decided to take up a chef apprenticeship instead. Heinz traveled and cooked through Europe, Asia and Australia before settling down in Bali where he opened the Ritz Carlton Bali as Executive Chef. Following this venture, he opened his own restaurant, Bumbu Bali, Restaurant & Cooking School. Bumbu Bali is the only restaurant in Bali that serves thoroughly authentic Balinese cuisine in a beautiful, traditional setting.

Cameron Douglas (Auckland, New Zealand)
Cameron Douglas is New Zealand's first and only Master Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers worldwide. He also acts as the South Pacific Director for the Global Guild of Sommeliers. His experience extends from writing, judging, commentating and reviewing wine, beverage and hospitality-related matters. He frequently travels to present NZ Wines and Foods to the world, while maintaining a regular guest lecturer spot at the French Culinary Institute of California. Cameron is also involved in education being in charge of the Wine & Beverage Programme at AUT University and an instructor and examiner for the MS programme.

Want to take your home movies to the next level? Post your mini-blockbusters or vacation videos to Facebook or YouTube? In five fun classes, learn how to shoot and edit short movies using an iPad. Improve your video and photo skills. The course is taught by professionals, but aimed at non-professionals.
Course requirements: please bring your own iPad and pre-load the iMovie application prior to boarding. If you do not already own the iMovie app for iOS, you must have iOS6 in order to purchase and download iMovie ($4.99) from the App Store. You cannot download the app on board the ship.
