Howard Fineman (Washington, D.C.)
Howard Fineman is a political analyst for NBC News and MSNBC and is the editorial director of the AOL Huffington Post Media Group, which provides web-based news, information and entertainment to an audience of 250 million readers worldwide. Called "one of the more recognizable pundits on cable television" by The New York Times, Fineman is a regular on MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews and The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell. Fineman also appears on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show, NBC's Today Show and the weekend NBC-syndicated Chris Matthews Show. He joined The Huffington Post, one of the nation's most innovative and popular news sites, as political editor in October 2010 after many years as a reporter, columnist, editor and Deputy Washington Bureau Chief at Newsweek magazine. After the March 2010 merger of AOL and the Huffington Post, Fineman was named Editorial Director of the combined organization. The author of scores of Newsweek cover stories, Fineman's work has also appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The New Republic. He has interviewed every major presidential candidate since 1985 as well as business and entertainment leaders ranging from Bill Gates and Ted Turner to Warren Beatty and Jay Leno. Although Fineman now reports on TV exclusively for NBC, he has appeared on most major public affairs shows, including: Nightline, Face the Nation, Larry King Live, Fox News Sunday, Charlie Rose, and The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. He was a regular analyst on CNN from 1993-1998 before joining NBC. His book, The Thirteen American Arguments, was published by Random House in 2008 and was a national best seller. The paperback edition was published in 2009 and went to additional printings in 2010.
Gavin McLean is the Senior Historian with the Ministry for Culture and Heritage in Wellington. He has written 45 books, ranging from the governor-general’s history to popular histories of New Zealand cities, ports, and shipping. In 2009/10 he curated an exhibition on prime ministers at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery. Gavin’s many maritime works include Captain’s Log, which partnered the 2001 TV series of the same name. In 2005, he co-edited a massive national history, Frontier of Dreams: The Story of New Zealand, and appeared in the accompanying 13-part TV series. Last year, he published histories of quarantine, surf life-saving, and the city of Otago. His background in heritage makes Gavin a natural at bringing history alive at the places where it actually happened, and he is a regular speaker with heritage and U3A groups. He earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of Otago.
Jon Bailey (Walnut Creek, CA)
Jon Bailey is well-known as a conductor, composer and teacher in the field of music, art and architecture. He holds degrees in music from Northwestern, UC Berkeley, and a doctorate from Stanford University. He was dean and professor of music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music prior to teaching in the Yale School of Music. Jon is professor emeritus at Pomona College in Claremont, CA where twice he won the coveted ‘outstanding teacher of the year.’ In addition he teaches at the prestigious Fromm Institute for Lifelong Learning at the University of San Francisco. He has been a program consultant for National Public Radio, and was an Arts Commissioner with the city of West Hollywood, CA. A recipient of two Fulbright research grants, he has traveled and studied in Europe and Australia. Jon has performed as a conductor and composer in Myerson Symphony Center, Dallas, Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall and Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles, Tchaikovsky Hall, Moscow and the Glinka Kappella in St. Petersburg. He has taken his collegiate and community choruses on tours to Europe, the Baltic Republics and Russia and has produced numerous CDs.
Dr. Ed Sobey holds a Ph.D. in oceanography from Oregon State University; and is a fellow emeritus in the Explorers Club and serves as the chair of the Pacific Northwest chapter. He is a global evangelist for creative learning by encouraging creativity, inventing, and innovation through his books, workshops, and exhibits that travel to museums throughout the world. Ed was the founding director of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, founder of the National Toy Hall of Fame, and co-founder of Kids Invent! In addition, he has directed five museums in the U.S. Ed has traveled to all seven continents, three oceans, and ten seas. Along the way, he has spent a winter in Antarctica, been attacked by sea lions and sharks, arrested by Peruvian border guards, and hit by a whale.
Rob Warne served for 28 years as a Senior Foreign Service Officer with the US Department of State. Specializing in international economics, he held a variety of senior posts at the Department and aboard. He has worked on Asian affairs much of his life and authored books and articles, and lectured frequently on the region. He will speak on the policy and economic issues relating to Africa and the Indian sub-continent, as well as on current developments in terrorism, globalization, and emerging nations.
Rob Warne was President of a Washington, D.C. based think tank focusing on East Asia. This entailed regular contacts with regional leaders, US senior officials and members of Congress and conferences on the region at many US universities cities. He was also a university professor at several universities in the region. Currently he is a program Chair at the National Foreign Affairs Training Center of the US Department of State where he has been teaching for five years. A graduate of Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School for International and Public Affairs, he received an advanced degree in economics at The Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies.
