Jon Sigurdsson (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland)
Jon was born in Reykjavík, Iceland in 1966. He gained a degree in Geology from the University of Iceland. His credentials include: The Science Institute, University of Iceland, various courses about Geology and Environmental issues in Iceland, The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the USA. Geological fieldwork in Greenland, Labrador, Newfoundland, Turkey, Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Geological work in Iceland includes studies of glaciers and volcanoes. During the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajokull Jon took part in the research and monitored the progress of the eruption with his camera. This eruption left millions of airline passengers stranded for days.
Jon's photography work has been noted worldwide and his images used in hundreds of books and magazines. His images from the recent volcanic eruption in Iceland have received recognition worldwide. Jon had a solo exhibition of his photographs from Greenland in the Nordic House Gallery in Reykjavík, Iceland.
Jon is an active climber and mountaineer. He is a honorary member of the Touring Club of Iceland and editor of the books that the Club publishes annually about Iceland. He is a member of the environmental committee of the Icelandic Alpine Club and former president of the Icelandic-Greenlandic association.
Prof. Louis Rene Beres (West Lafayette, IN)
Professor of Political Science and International Law at Purdue University, columnist and author, Dr. Beres was educated at Princeton (Ph.D., 1971). His ten published books deal with such issues as US foreign policy, terrorism, counter-terrorism, nuclear strategy and nuclear war. Dr. Beres is also the author of more than fifty major law journal articles, and of over one hundred scholarly articles dealing with various philosophical, psychological, historical and military dimensions of world politics. His lectures provide a stimulating and informed guide to critical issues of our time.
Dr. Garrett McAinsh (Little Rock, AR)
Garrett McAinsh holds a Ph.D. in early modern European history from Emory University and has taught for nearly 20 years at Hendrix College, where he holds an endowed chair as the Harold and Lucy Cabe Distinguished Professor of History. He has published a number of articles and book chapters on various aspects of European history, and has traveled widely throughout Europe. Dr. McAinsh’s ability to talk about history with clarity, sophistication, and wit, has made him an extremely popular speaker whose presentations bring the past alive. Through his incorporation and analysis of visual images his listeners get a vivid picture of what life was really like at various periods in the lands they are about to visit.
Bill Miller (Secaucus, NJ)
Bill Miller is considered an international authority on the subject of ocean liners and cruise ships. This includes those great ships of the past, those "floating palaces," as well as the current generation of cruise ships, the "floating resorts." Called "Mr. Ocean Liner," he has written over 60 books on the subject - from early steamers, immigrant ships and liners at war to other titles on their fabulous interiors, in post card form and about the highly collectible artifacts from them.
Arguably America's first superstar chef. As chef and owner of Lutece for 34 years, André has served some of the world's finest French cuisine, and elevated it to a high art. Among his many honors, he has received a James Beard Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.
Chef Thrainn Freyr Vigfússon is one of the most talented young chefs of Iceland. In 2007 he was the Icelandic Chef of the Year, in 2009 he won silver in the Scandinavian Chef of the Year, and as recently as 2011, he won seventh place in the world's most prestigious cooking competition, the Bocuse d'Or. Thrainn's current role as head chef at Kolabrautin, shows Reykjavík's latest addition to the flourishing food scene in Iceland. His restaurant offers a modern Nordic cuisine with the ancient traditions of the Mediterranean while his revolutionary spirit and culinary drive are visually appealing as well as pleasing to the palate.
Bill St. John (Chicago, IL)
Bill St. John has written and taught about wine for more than 30 years. He hails from Denver where he was a newspaper reporter, television journalist, and college professor. Bill currently lives in Chicago where he writes for the Chicago Tribune companies; teaches at his wine school, St. John on Wine; and lectures on history, food, wine, religion, public policy and writing at the University of Chicago's Graham School. Bill St. John is a former journalist and television reporter who has moved on to teach and write about wine, food, and food preparation.
