In May 2009, 8-year-old piano prodigy Umi Garrett appeared on NBC’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Umi was such a sensation that her young career has since skyrocketed, receiving requests to perform worldwide and appearing regularly with symphony orchestras in the US and around the world. Now at age 13, Umi’s most recent accomplishments include winning first prize at the 13th Osaka International Music Competition in Japan, The Chopin International Competition "Chopin Plus" in Budapest, Hungary, and the Bradshaw and Buono International Piano Competition in New York. The young pianist has thrilled classical patrons in theaters from Panama to the Netherlands and beyond. Umi made her debut on the Asian continent with the Wuhan Symphony Orchestra in 2010 and in 2012 performed with Liepaja Symphony Orchestra in Latvia, her European Orchestral debut. Umi has performed solo concerts in Italy, Poland, Germany, Latvia, Luxembourg, Australia, Japan and Panama. Umi was the Grand Prix winner (Highest award given) at The International Chopin Competition in Hartford in 2011 and was subsequently invited to perform at Carnegie (Weill) Hall.

Dr. Yvette Sencer (Boca Raton, FL)
A specialist in the history of art and architecture, Dr. Yvette Jayson Sencer was Professor and Chair of Art History and Dean of Graduate Studies at State University of New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. An animated, popular speaker, passionate about art and teaching, she now presents an annual lecture series at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, and writes and speaks on many periods of art history. Active in art education worldwide, Dr. Sencer represented North America for InSEA (the International Society for Education through Art), was World Councilor for USSEA (the United States Society for Education through Art), and was President of the University Council for Art Education.
Charles Carlton (Beaufort, NC)
No one can explain the British royal family and its checkered history better than Charles Carlton. A native of England, who has lived in the United States for nearly forty years; he is a retired Professor of British History at North Carolina State University and has been a Visiting Professor of Military History at Duke. Dr. Carlton is the author of some twelve books, as well as numerous articles, reviews and pieces in newspapers including the London Sunday Times and the Boston Globe. His books on Royal Mistresses, Royal Childhoods, and Royal Warriors, as well as his biography of King Charles I, have established him as a leading authority in the field. Professor Carlton can bridge the gap between academia and general audiences. For instance, the BBC turned his award winning study “Going to the Wars: the Experience of the British Civil Wars, 1638-52” into a well-received television documentary. He has been a visiting professor at universities in China, India, Scotland, and Australia. Over the last twenty five years, he has lectured extensively to English Speaking Union Groups throughout the United States, and throughout the world. Graced with wit and humor, deep learning and style, Charles Carlton's lectures provided an entertaining yet thoughtful understanding of the ever fascinating topic of the British Royal family in particular and Monarchies in general.
Jeffrey L. Cummings (Henderson, NV)
Jeffrey L. Cummings, M.D., Sc.D. is Director of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas, NV and Cleveland, OH. He is Camille and Larry Ruvo Chair of the Neurological Institute of Cleveland Clinic. The Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health is a clinical care, translational research, and clinical trials enterprise specializing in care of patients with neurocognitive deficits and development of new therapies for neurodegenerative disorders.
Dr. Cummings was featured in the Gentleman’s Quarterly, Vogue and Vanity Fair as a “Rockstar of Science.” He is an experienced clinical trialist with expertise in clinical trial design and analysis, global trial implementation, and trial outcome measures. Dr. Cummings is the author of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory which is the most commonly used tool for clinical trials characterizing behavioral disturbances in dementia syndromes.
Dr. William M. Fowler (Reading, MA)
The Distinguished Professor of History at Northeastern University, Dr. William Fowler's many books include William Ellery: A Rhode Island Politico and Lord of Admiralty, Rebels Under Sail: The Navy in the Revolution, Jack Tars and Commodores: The American Navy, 1783-1815; Samuel Adams: Radical Puritan, and Empires at War: The French and Indian War and the Struggle for North America. He is co-author of America and the Sea: A Maritime History.
Professor Fowler has taught courses on the History of Boston, Maritime History, Military History, and the History of New England. He has taught at Mystic Seaport Museum and has lectured for the Smithsonian Institution, the United States Naval War College, and the Sea Education Association. He is a trustee of the Ralph Waldo Emerson Association, the Paul Revere Memorial Association, the Old North Church Foundation, and the New England Quarterly. He is an honorary member of the Boston Marine Society and the Society of the Cincinnati.

Sheldon Simon (Ph.D. University of Minnesota) is professor of international politics and a specialist in U.S. national security and Asian international politics at Arizona State University where he has been a member of the faculty since 1975. The author or editor of ten books and over 130 scholarly articles and book chapters, Professor Simon's most recent books are Religion and Conflict in South and Southeast Asia: Disrupting Violence (2007) and China, the United States, and Southeast Asia: Perspectives from Politics, Economics, and Security (2008). Dr. Simon regularly consults with the U.S. State and Defense Departments on Asian security issues and travels abroad annually for research and guest lectures.

Passport To Music presented by Yamaha and Crystal Cruises: Instructor Thomas Swenson (Greensboro, NC) teaches an innovative and fun course as an introduction to keyboard playing for adults. Tradition and technology meet in harmony to create this progressive piano-style program. With an emphasis on hands-on learning using Yamaha's exciting portable keyboards supported by the Clavinova digital piano, guests learn nearly a dozen songs during the cruise. An overview of general musical skills, including listening skills and note reading is included, as well as fun group activities such as music trivia and name that song. Passport To Music is designed for those with little or no previous keyboard experience.

The relaxing and social aspects of knitting have been added on select cruises. On this sailing, Patrice Martin (Pound Ridge, NY) will host knitting classes and all levels are welcome. If you do not already own the iMovie for iOS app, you must have iOS7 in order to download iMovie from the App Store. If you have an older version of the iMovie app, be sure to update to the current version. You cannot download the app on board the ship. In addition, during the spring and summer months, he is the Director of Golf Instruction at Arrowhead Golf Club (Golf Digest Top 100 golf courses) in Littleton, CO. During the winter, Joe is the Director of Golf Instruction at the beautiful Classic Golf Club in Palm Springs, CA. Joe hosted the Bob Hope golf tournament from 2006 - 2009. Joe has been honored with the 1997 nomination for PGA Teaching Professional and Junior Golf Leader as well as the 2009/2010 President’s Council Award for Outstanding Golf Instructor of Developing Golf Instruction Programs. He has been featured in 2010 Style magazine during the U.S. Open, and Boomer Golf News for his outstanding teaching abilities. Joe has signed with Southwest Airlines and Swift Air for his golf instructions and DVDs while in the air on WIFI. Recently, due to the large number of requests from his students around the world, Joe released a DVD set, Fundamentals of Golf. Joe considers teaching golf to others to be one of the highlights of his life.
