Crystal Visions Enrichment Program
Peter Smith (Kent, England)
Peter has primarily technical and military background. Following a variety of jobs as a student, including periods spent working in a mortuary and a hospital operating theatre, he joined the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm as a helicopter pilot. Following basic flying training, he was forced by a detached retina to transfer to the Air Traffic Control branch, qualifying as both a terminal (airfield) and area radar controller. In this capacity he served both at Royal Naval air stations and Royal Air Force area radar units, as well as a number of sea tours. The longest of these was as the Air Staff Officer on board the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious immediately after the ship’s completion, when the carrier – with HRH Prince Andrew on board as a front-line helicopter pilot – took part in the Falklands War. Following promotion, he was appointed to a succession of staff jobs in the London area, where he worked on a variety of projects classified above 'Secret,' including United Kingdom preparations for war and transition to war and he became very familiar with current techniques for intelligence gathering, dissemination and related subjects.
After leaving the Royal Navy, he moved with his wife Sally to the Principality of Andorra, in the eastern Pyrenees. Since 2003 he has worked as a full-time author, writing for several of the United Kingdom’s biggest publishing houses, including Macmillan using the nom de plume James Barrington. These books were Overkill, Pandemic, Foxbat, Timebomb, Payback and Manhunt. Again writing as James Barrington he ghosted one non-fiction book for Penguin/Michael Joseph. This was Joint Force Harrier, an account of Royal Navy front-line Harrier operations in Afghanistan. Also for Macmillan he's written two Second World War thrillers as Max Adams (To Do or Die and Right and Glory).
Peter then moved to Transworld and acquired a new nom de plume, James Becker, to write historical mystery thrillers: The First Apostle, The Moses Stone, The Messiah Secret, The Nosferatu Scroll, Echo of the Reich and The Lost Testament. He also writes for Simon & Schuster as Jack Steel (The Titanic Secret and The Ripper Secret) and for The Endeavour Press as Tom Kasey (Sanctuary, Trade Off and The Dante Conspiracy), as Thomas Payne (Uncommon Sense) and also as James Barrington (Falklands: Voyage to War and John Browning: Man and Gun Maker). Most of these books have been sold to foreign publishers.
Sir Stephen Brown (Ilkley, England)
Stephen Brown was born in 1945 in Leeds. After leaving school he served for 10 years with the Royal Artillery in Germany, Northern Ireland and Oman. During this time, he read Asian and African history at Sussex University. In 1976 he joined the Diplomatic Service. His first postings were to Nicosia and Paris. Returning to the FCO in 1984, he dealt with Mexico, Cuba and Central America. In 1989, after a short period in the Department of Trade & Industry, he was appointed British Consul-General in Melbourne. This was the start of over a decade of service in the Asia-Pacific region. In 1994 he was appointed Director of Trade Promotion at the British Embassy in Beijing. Over the next 3 years he played a key role in strengthening the UK’s diplomatic and trade presence in China.
Appointed Ambassador to The Republic of Korea in 1997, he was involved in helping Korea overcome the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997 and then in supporting President Kim Dae-jung’s “Sunshine Policy” towards North Korea. After leaving Seoul, he helped negotiate diplomatic relations between the UK and North Korea. He was High Commissioner to Singapore from 2001 – 2002 before becoming Chief Executive of UK Trade & Investment. Much of his time was spent assisting UK companies do business with Asia and in attracting inward investment to the UK. Sir Stephen is currently Co-Chairman of ADRg Ambassadors, a corporate diplomacy and dispute resolution partnership. He is also an advisor to Vermilion Partners, a strategic advisory company working in China. He assumes the Chair of The (UK-Australia) Cook Society in 2013 and is on the committee of the Anglo-Korean Society.

Local Insights Lecturer: Japanese Art & Culture
Mary Symons (Dorset, England)
Mary’s fascination with Japan started when she accompanied her husband, Steven, on a Far East business trip and was immediately struck by a whole new world of history and culture; even today it is still a country little understood in the West despite the familiarity we have with everyday Japanese products. Initially, before starting a business, to train in Ikebana was a very difficult route involving intensive training in the UK and Japan, “all to arrange flowers!” as Mary jokes.
Mary qualified with the Ohara School of Ikebana, one of the three most famous schools in Japan. Teaching and demonstrating is still the part Mary really enjoys, seeing others delight at what they can produce under tuition. She found that gaining a level of qualification in flower arranging was a serious business to the Japanese and in particular large corporations in the City of London who wanted to ensure they were getting the “real thing” before becoming a client with the rental floral display business that Mary was building.
Despite the rather rigid rules and customs observed by the Japanese themselves, Mary has always tried to give audiences what they want with a light hearted, but very informative look at Japanese culture to include Ikebana, The Tea Ceremony, Costumes and Cuisine in a way that is acceptable and fun to Westerners. To maintain her own knowledge and interest, she makes frequent trips to Japan and the Far East, to study and absorb not only the cultural side of daily life, but also to experience the high tech world that Japan continues to offer.
