Neil Leifer (New York, NY)
Neil Leifer became a professional photographer while still in his teens. Beginning in 1960 as a freelancer, his pictures began regularly appearing in every major national magazine, including the Saturday Evening Post, Look, LIFE, Newsweek, Time and, most often, Sports Illustrated. In August 1972, Leifer became a staff photographer for Sports Illustrated, leaving them in 1978 to become a staff photographer for Time. In 1988 he was made a contributing photographer at LIFE and spent the next two years working for both Time and LIFE magazines. By the time he left Time, Inc. in 1990, his photographs had appeared on more than 200 Sports Illustrated, Time, and People covers – then the most covers ever published by one photographer in Time, Inc. history.
Leifer has published 16 books, 9 of which are collections of his sports photographs. His two most recent books, Ballet in the Dirt and Guts and Glory, both published by TASCHEN, showcase the very best of his Major League Baseball and Professional Football photographs. In the fall of 2013, Sports Illustrated will publish a memoir of Neil Leifer’s remarkable career. Leifer has traveled all over the world on sports assignments.
He has photographed 16 Olympic Games (7 Winter and 9 Summer), 4 Soccer World Cups, 15 Kentucky Derbies, countless World Series games, the first 10 Super Bowls, and every important heavyweight title fight since Floyd Patterson beat Ingemar Johansson to regain the title in 1960. He has photographed his favorite subject, Muhammad Ali, on almost 60 different occasions – at fights and more than 30 photo sessions. While Neil Leifer now devotes almost 100% of his time to producing and directing films, there is a very good chance that you'll spot him, camera in hand, at any big championship fight. "Boxing is the one sport I still love shooting."
General Hugh Shelton (Newport, NC)
As America responds to security threats at home and abroad, perhaps no one is more qualified to discuss our national security than General Hugh Shelton, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. During his tenure, he worked tirelessly on behalf of service members, their families, and military retirees by championing a number of landmark quality-of-life initiatives, including: the largest pay raise in 18 years; pay table and bonus reform; and critical improvements in both retirement and healthcare programs. He made great strides in improving the readiness and retention of the current force, while simultaneously crafting Joint Vision 2020; the roadmap for the Future Joint Force. General Shelton also established the Joint Forces Command to consolidate joint experimentation efforts and guide the transformation of the U.S. armed forces for the twenty-first century.
In a further testament to General Shelton's strong character, determination, and positive attitude, he can also speak about his recovery from the spinal cord injury he suffered after an accident in the spring of 2002. Initially given little chance of walking again or using his hands, he is now close to a full recovery, and continues to be an inspiration to others. He recently released the book Secrets of Success, a compilation featuring interviews with prominent men and women who focus on values-based leadership. His autobiography, Without Hesitation or Reservation, was published in 2010.

Returning to the FCO in 1984, he dealt with Mexico, Cuba and Central America. Appointed Ambassador to The Republic of Korea in 1997, he was involved in helping Korea overcome the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997 and then in supporting President Kim Dae-jung’s “Sunshine Policy” towards North Korea. After leaving Seoul, he helped negotiate diplomatic relations between the UK and North Korea. He was High Commissioner to Singapore from 2001 – 2002 before becoming Chief Executive of UK Trade & Investment. Much of his time was spent assisting UK companies do business with Asia and in attracting inward investment to the UK. He spent 10 years working with a major UK publisher and oversaw the launch and growth of a number of specialist consumer magazines including Garden News, Smash Hits, Angling Times and Q magazine, amongst others. In 1989, a further change in direction saw Patrick join Page & Moy, a leading tour operator, as Marketing Director. At the time, Page & Moy was wholly owned by a subsidiary of Barclays Bank PLC., but Patrick was part of a management buy-out in 1993 which provided the company with greater independence.
Patrick developed the company’s tour programs and introduced cruising and specialist art, history and music holidays. He considers himself extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit many countries throughout the world and has a great deal of experience of cruising from an operational and destinations perspective. He has visited all the continents with the exception of Antarctica. His favorite destinations are Venice and Hawaii. After the sale of Page & Moy in 2004, Patrick was invited to join the UK Government’s “Businesslink” service where he provided business support to a range of UK companies for two years prior to taking early retirement.
