To date, Verla has provided enrichment experiences and destination lectures on 17 world cruises and over 500 cruises on lines in the six-star and above category.

Special Interest Lecturer

Captain Richard Hayman (Pomona, NY)
An adventurer who has sailed the seven seas and dozens of rivers in various vessels – from sea schooners in the Pacific to kayaks in the Amazon to icebreakers in Antarctica – Captain Richard Hayman has voyaged extensively in the seas and rivers of China.  He talks about the great voyages of exploration – including those of the celebrated Chinese treasure fleets – navigation, and oceanography. A river navigation specialist, Captain Hayman is especially at home on China’s Yangzi River, about which he has written several works, including Yangzi River Map: from Source to Sea and Three Gorges of the Yangzi River. He has also written the Coastal Harbor Guide to the U.S., soon to be published on CD for electronic navigation. Hayman has been a featured presenter at the United Nations, the Explorers Club, the Society of Naval Architects, and at numerous universities. His home port is New York and the Hudson River, where he is skipper of the historic English Channel 'yawl Klang II,' a sail ferry built in 1924.

Special Interest Lecturer

Richard Hutto (Atlanta, GA)
Richard Jay Hutto, one of the foremost historians of the Gilded Age, compiled and edited Accepted Fables, the autobiography of Jordan Massee, and wrote Entitled: American Women, Titled Husbands, and the Pursuit of Excess (with a preface by HI&RH The Grand Duchess of Tuscany), as well as Crowning Glory: American Wives of Princes and Dukes (with a preface by HRH Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark), and Their Gilded Cage: The Jekyll Island Club Members (with a preface by Stillman Rockefeller).  A former attorney, he served as White House Appointments Secretary to the Carter Family and was Chairman of the Georgia Council for the Arts.  A frequent international lecturer, Hutto was an elected member of the City Council of Macon, GA, and is a Knight of Malta and a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre.

This year Hutto was featured as an on-air authority (and received credit as a historical consultant) in a National Geographic Channel international documentary about the most lavish social event of the Gilded Age. Using Hutto’s photographs and expertise, the setting for this over-the-top 1897 event was re-created on film. He recently was also featured on a lengthy national television broadcast by Glenn Beck about the founding of the Federal Reserve Bank. Hutto’s most recent book, released by Lyons Press/Globe Pequot in October, 2010, is A Peculiar Tribe of People: Murder and Madness in the Heart of Georgia.
