Verla Brown (Hilton Head Island, SC)
Verla Brown is an accomplished lecturer and artist who has been specializing in art appreciation lectures and art workshops around the world. Verla’s preferred art medium is oriental brush painting, and she is well known for her “People Around The World” collection; a 100 painting depiction of characters in native dress performing the daily tasks of their culture. They are shown in many exhibitions as well as added to private collections. Verla has lectured for many Fortune 500 corporations, including Westinghouse, General Electric, Mobile Oil Corporation, and Eli Lilly. She has been a guest lecturer for several universities, highlighting the special significance and impact of art on a global scale. Most recently, she was a lecturer for The University of South Carolina, on the subject of Southeast Asia. To date, Verla has provided enrichment experiences and destination lectures on 17 world cruises and over 500 cruises on lines in the six-star and above category. While she specializes in art of the Orient, her destination lectures include Africa, Asia and Australia.

Dr. Anthony F. Aveni (Hamilton, NY)
Anthony F. Aveni is the Russell Colgate Distinguished Professor of Astronomy and Anthropology at Colgate University. He has spoken or written on astronomy-related subjects on the Discovery Channel, PBS-Nova, The New York Times, The Larry King Show, and NBC's Today show. His most recent books include People and the Sky: Our Ancestors and the Cosmos; Conversing With the Planets, a work that weaves together cosmology, mythology, and the anthropology of ancient cultures; Behind the Crystal Ball: Magic, Science and Religion from Antiquity through the New Age; and The Book of the Year: A Brief History of Our Seasonal Holidays.

Ying Compestine is a national presence in Asian culture and cuisine and an award-winning author. From acting as former food editor for Martha Stewart's Whole Living magazine, Ying has also written 18 cookbooks, with an emphasis in showcasing the Asian palatte. She has been featured on various national television programs and is consistently spotlighted in different news media outlets, including the New York Times and Huffington Post. Having been born and raised in China, Ying is proud of her heritage and promotes the allure of Asian cuisine.
Serge Dansereau (Sydney, Australia)
Serge Dansereau was humbly raised in French Canada where his father's garden hleped to feed a family of five children. From an early start, his life has been shaped by food. Serge picked beans at 12, served his apprenticeship in the kitchens of Canada, and came to Austaralia as chef of Sydney's first five-star restaurant, Kable's. His passion for fresh produce has helped encourage many specialist food producers in Australia. Currently, he is the owner and head chef of The Bathers' Pavilion Cafe and Restaurant in Balmoral, New South Wales.
This exclusive program brings aboard local entertainers and experts to perform and share their unique, first-hand knowledge of art, politics, history, geography or archaeology of select regions and destinations. Guests can enjoy live lectures and interviews at sea and local shows in port.
Sir James Hodge (London, England)
Sir James Hodge retired in 2003 after a 37-year career in the British Diplomatic Service that took him to Japan and Nigeria. He was also Deputy Head of Mission in the British Embassies at Copenhagen and Beijing. He served as Ambassador to Thailand and to Laos before becoming Consul-General to Hong Kong and to Macao. Sir James has wide historical and literary interests, focusing particularly on Asia (notably China and South East Asia). As well as delivering talks on political and economic issues, he has been in demand as a speaker on more lighthearted occasions such as events held by St. George’s and St. Andrew’s Societies and celebrations of Admiral Lord Nelson. The British Chambers of Commerce and others have also enjoyed his none-too-serious reflections on diplomatic life. Sir James was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order and a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George by Queen Elizabeth II. Sir James was also appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the White Elephant by the King of Thailand.

The relaxing and social aspects of knitting have been added on select cruises. On this sailing, Merina Benner (Ottawa, Canada) will host knitting classes and all levels are welcome. Participants are encouraged to knit together sharing skills and advice in a congenial environment. Participation is limited.

Course requirements: please bring your own iPad pre-loaded with the iMovie application. If you do not already own the iMovie for iOS app, you must have iOS7 in order to download iMovie from the App Store. If you have an older version of the iMovie app, be sure to update to the current version. You cannot download the app on board the ship. Please sign up online using the Priority Check-in & Planning Center (PCPC). If you sign up on board, make sure to sign up EARLY, in the Library, as the class size is limited.
