Crystal Visions Enrichment Program

Destination Lecturer

Verla Brown (Hilton Head Island, SC)
Verla Brown is an accomplished lecturer and artist who has been specializing in art appreciation lectures and art workshops around the world. Verla’s preferred art medium is oriental brush painting, and she is well known for her “People Around The World” collection; a 100 painting depiction of characters in native dress performing the daily tasks of their culture. They are shown in many exhibitions as well as added to private collections. Verla has lectured for many Fortune 500 corporations, including Westinghouse, General Electric, Mobile Oil Corporation, and Eli Lilly. She has been a guest lecturer for several universities, highlighting the special significance and impact of art on a global scale. Most recently, she was a lecturer for The University of South Carolina, on the subject of Southeast Asia. To date, Verla has provided enrichment experiences and destination lectures on 17 world cruises and over 500 cruises on lines in the six-star and above category. While she specializes in art of the Orient, her destination lectures include Africa, Asia and Australia.

Local Insights

This exclusive program brings aboard local entertainers and experts to perform and share their unique, first-hand knowledge of art, politics, history, geography or archaeology of select regions and destinations. Guests can enjoy live lectures and interviews at sea and local shows in port.

Special Interest Lecturer: World Affairs

Sir James Hodge (London, England)
Sir James Hodge retired in 2003 after a 37-year career in the British Diplomatic Service that took him to Japan and Nigeria. He was also Deputy Head of Mission in the British Embassies at Copenhagen and Beijing. He served as Ambassador to Thailand and to Laos before becoming Consul-General to Hong Kong and to Macao. Sir James has wide historical and literary interests, focusing particularly on Asia (notably China and South East Asia).  As well as delivering talks on political and economic issues, he has been in demand as a speaker on more lighthearted occasions such as events held by St. George’s and St. Andrew’s Societies and celebrations of Admiral Lord Nelson. The British Chambers of Commerce and others have also enjoyed his none-too-serious reflections on diplomatic life. Sir James was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order and a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George by Queen Elizabeth II. Sir James was also appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the White Elephant by the King of Thailand.
