Jan 20, Tuesday
Semarang, Indonesia » 7 am 7 pm

Located on the north coast of the island of Java, Indonesia, Semarang is the capital of its province, playing a prominent role as both busy commercial center and important cultural destination. The lowlands are characterized by offices, business centers and industrial estates, while up in the hills are houses with lovely gardens and superb views. The city’s current vibrancy could perhaps have been predicted, as Semarang has been a bustling trading center since the Dutch colonial era, when the Dutch East Indies Company established tobacco plantations and built infrastructure such as roads and railroads. The Dutch influence can still be seen in the older part of the city near the harbor. Other cultures, primarily that of the Chinese, also have left their imprint on Semarang and continue to be a significant part of what it is to live in and visit Java.

Jan 21, Wednesday
Jakarta, Indonesia » 10 am 5 pm

One of Asia’s most electrifying urban centers, Jakarta is a sprawling, heavily populated city of almost 10 million people. Famous for its shopping, people come to Jakarta from all over the world to snap up bargains, both in traditional open-air marketplaces and ritzy super malls. The region is particularly known for its batik outlets and factories. Despite being the capital of the world’s largest Islamic country, Jakarta has one of the hippest nightlife scenes in Southeast Asia, with over 200 bars, discos, pubs and upscale lounges spread across the city.

Whatever your tastes—for European culture, sultanate history or delicious food—Malacca City is sure to deliver. Colonization by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, along with the presence of a lively Chinatown, give this capital city a spellbinding mix of architecture and traditions.  Modern prosperity has grabbed hold of Malacca and greater Malaysia, with commercial development and redevelopment producing a wealth of shopping malls and numerous reclamation projects.  But at the heart of Malacca is its history, giving it a multicultural heritage and architectural legacy that has earned Malacca a designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Jan 24, Saturday
  Belawan, Indonesia » 8 am 5 pm

Indonesia’s busiest port outside Java, Belawan has seen more than a century of bustling commerce, mostly in the exportation of tobacco, rubber and palm oil. The port was expanded numerous times since its initial construction in 1890, with a major renovation in the 1980s bringing a new surge in trade activity. About one-fifth of Indonesia’s container exports go through Belawan, sending some of the world’s most ubiquitous and desired products, including coffee and tea, out into the world. Attractions within the city speak to its international influences and commercial success, all of which are reflected in  fine Art Deco buildings from the Dutch colonial era, the Great Mosque, a Buddhist temple called Vihara Borobudur, and a Chinese Temple called Vihara Gunung Timur.
