Mar 2, Sunday
Surabaya, Indonesia » 7 am 6 pm

After Jakarta, Surabaya is the most populous city in Indonesia, with over 2.7 million people living within the chartered city limits. With such a large number of people comes a frenetic energy bordering on chaos and an eye-opening mix of rich and poor, students and professionals, urban amenities and old traditions. Cultures mix here too. The only synagogue in Indonesia is located in Surabaya, along with the Grand Mosque, the largest mosque in East Java. Cheng Ho Mosque displays Chinese-style architecture, while a Soviet-built submarine is preserved as a monument. Most important to the locals, perhaps, is the city’s connection to Indonesian independence, as it was here in “the city of heroes” that the battle for liberation began.

Mar 3, Monday
Semarang/Borobudur, Indonesia » 7 am 9 pm

Located on the north coast of the island of Java, Indonesia, Semarang is the capital of its province, playing a prominent role as both busy commercial center and important cultural destination. The lowlands are characterized by offices, business centers and industrial estates, while up in the hills are houses with lovely gardens and superb views. The city’s current vibrancy could perhaps have been predicted, as Semarang has been a bustling trading center since the Dutch colonial era, when the Dutch East Indies Company established tobacco plantations and built infrastructure such as roads and railroads. The Dutch influence can still be seen in the older part of the city near the harbor. Other cultures, primarily that of the Chinese, also have left their imprint on Semarang and continue to be a significant part of what it is to live in and visit Java.

Mar 5, Wednesday
  Makassar/Ujung Pandang, Indonesia » 7 am 6 pm

Makassar’s story is not one of a quaint hamlet being suddenly discovered and expanded to accommodate business and entertainment. In fact, the city has been a long-time gateway to East Indonesia and, as early as the 14th century, it was a thriving sea port and trading hub. Silks, tea and porcelain came from China, India and Cambodia, while Indonesia’s spices and pearls left Makassar’s shores for faraway destinations. Today, Makassar is the capital of South Sulawesi and is still a trading hub—a little of your time for a memorable jaunt to the stunning mountains of the Tana Toraja highlands, or for a plunge in some of the best diving waters in the world. Of course, traditional currency works here as well. The first exclusive shopping center of the region opened in July 2010, offering the people of Indonesia their first chance to scoop up famous brands such as Hugo Boss and Armani.
