Venture along streets filled with beautiful old homes, magnificent churches and imposing public buildings while your guide brings to life Charleston’s role in the War Between the States. See the Battery, a charming neighborhood built by wealthy rice and cotton farmers between 1820 and 1850 and later fortified for the war. Pass St. Michael’s Church and view its steeple, which during the war was painted black to make it less conspicuous and help prevent the church’s destruction.

Also, pass the site of the building where the Ordinance of Secession was signed, the Confederate Museum where artifacts from the war are housed, and the Citadel.

Following your survey of the Civil War as fought on land, continue to the Warren Lasch Conservation Center to learn how battles were waged at sea. It is here you will see the Confederate submarine, H.L. Hunley. On February 17, 1864, the submarine successfully sank the Union warship, Housatonic, in the Charleston Harbor. Afterward, H.L. Hunley also sank, taking her entire crew with her. She remained at the bottom of the Atlantic until August 8, 2000, when after months of planning and hard work by archaeologists, divers and marine engineers, she was successfully raised and taken to the site you are exploring today.

As you examine the submarine, the surrounding laboratory and the adjacent exhibits, you will hear interesting facts about the submarine’s construction and learn about her groundbreaking technology.
