Leaving the pier, travel to enjoy views of San Felipe Fortress, a military fortress situated outside the walled city. The imposing structure is considered to be the most outstanding feat of Spanish military engineering in the New World. Construction on the fort began in 1536 and continued for 121 years.

Pause to ponder the immensity of the fort and take a few photographs before heading to the historic colonial city for a short, guided walk. Get a sense for why Cartagena is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as you appreciate the solid enormity of the city walls, which took 194 years to build. An important task, as the walls protected Cartagena from English pirates and other would-be invaders.

Walking along atmospheric streets, also appreciate the charm of the city’s Spanish colonial architecture, some of the most impressive and well-preserved in South America. View old merchant’s houses, flower-bedecked balconies, stunning civic buildings and beautiful churches. Many squares and public spaces are lined by sidewalk cafes and restaurants, where Colombians and visitors alike relax and enjoy the magic of this amazing city.

A modern contrast to the Old City is Boca Grande, which you will reach after a short transfer by motor coach. Here, modern high-rise apartment buildings, hotels and restaurants are bustling with both locals and vacationers.

A brief stop will be made at the Pierno Gallo shopping center, famous for its variety of jewelry shops showcasing the renowned Colombian emerald.

A look at Cartagena past and present drawing to a close, rejoin your motor coach for the 30-minute return to the pier and your Crystal ship. They also were used as prison cells, giving these spaces deep within the arcaded walls the colloquial name “The Dungeons.”

Cartagena Countryside & Mud Volcano
Excursion Code CTG-G
Highlights The words “mud” and “bath” don’t often go together, but here at a countryside mud volcano they do, making this excursion truly memorable and unique to your Colombian experience.
Activity Level Moderate Adventure
Walking Type Moderate Moderate
Age Appropriateness All Ages
Duration Approximately 4 hours
Price $53

Setting out from the pier, travel to enjoy views of San Felipe Fortress, a military fortress situated outside the walled city. The imposing structure is considered to be the most outstanding feat of Spanish military engineering in the New World. Construction on the fort began in 1536 and continued for 121 years.

Pause to ponder the immensity of the fort and take a few photographs before venturing by motor coach through the narrow streets of the old walled city of Cartagena. A 45-minute journey through the countryside then brings you to El Totumo, a mud volcano rising almost 50 feet from the ground, like an oversized anthill.

El Totumo is one of the best examples of its kind, and as you will discover, it is one of the messiest. Created by natural gasses emitted by decaying organic matter, a mud hill grows in size over time, eventually becoming a miniature volcano with a rich, creamy mud crater at the top.

If you have never been in a mud volcano before, you are in for an experience that may be a bit strange, but altogether is a real treat. Climb the wooden staircase to the volcano, then lie back and enjoy a massage from an experienced local. Soon, you will be drifting into a mud-induced, relaxed state of mind. The sensation of slithering around in the mud may not appeal to you at first, but allow yourself to become one with the earth and be soothed by the mud’s natural properties, not to mention the expert hands of your masseuse.

Afterward, step back down the staircase and stroll to the nearby lake, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip and wash off.

Return to the pier and your Crystal ship with a one-hour transfer by motor coach, feeling rejuvenated by your bath of mud and water.

Important Notes:
As this excursion involves climbing and descending narrow wooden stairways, which may be slippery with mud, this excursion is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. As hot and humid conditions can be expected, along with potentially strong breezes, it is recommended that guests dress in casual clothing, a hat and flat, comfortable shoes or sandals. Guests should also wear a swimsuit underneath clothing and bring a bag for wet swimwear. Your ship’s escort will provide towels. Some crowding may be expected at the mud volcano. As you may get wet on this excursion, any electronic devices (such as MP3 players, cell phones, cameras, etc.), as well as any valuable items must be stored in a sealable, waterproof dry bag or left on board the ship. Any damage occurring to these items are the responsibility of the guests. This excursion will operate in all weather conditions.

First up are your travels to enjoy views of San Felipe Fortress, a military fortress situated outside the walled city. The imposing structure is considered to be the most outstanding feat of Spanish military engineering in the New World. Construction on the fort began in 1536 and continued for 121 years.

Pause to ponder the immensity of the fort and take a few photographs before rejoining your motor coach and heading to the El Cabrero neighborhood for a visit to the Rafael Nuñez House & Museum. The house, where he lived and died, is built in the spectacular Antilles architectural style, and is now a museum dedicated to telling the story of Nuñez’s life and work.

During your visit, you will hear a short lecture on the history of how the city walls were constructed, a 194-year endeavor resulting in nine miles of ramparts that surround the historic colonial city.

Next visit Heredia Theatre, a splendid structure located in La Plaza de la Merced. An intricate design gives the theater’s auditorium a lacey appearance, with grand spaces accentuated by stairways and sculptures carved from Italian Carrera marble, balconies made of Portuguese wood and a ceiling decorated by Colombian artist Enrique Grau.

Admire the theater’s impressive stature and ornate décor and then join a guided walk through the Old City, with chances to appreciate the charm of its Spanish colonial architecture, some of the most impressive and well-preserved in South America. View old merchant’s houses, flower-bedecked balconies, stunning civic buildings and beautiful churches. No wonder this old part of town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
