A short transfer will deliver you to the starting point of your jog, situated in the picturesque setting above the river Ombla. Stretch out and begin your guided run, following the former train route that once connected Dubrovnik with the inland areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The route today connects active visitors like you with the beauty of Croatia, with its sparkling waters and rugged mountains forming majestic vistas. As you run at a pace of about 10 minutes per mile, take in the magnificent views, stopping several times to catch your breath and further appreciate the scenery.

Built in 1969, the cable car was a prized feature of the city, affording striking views of Dubrovnik and the surrounding area. When war came in 1991, the cable car was destroyed and remained in disrepair until its recent restoration.

Enjoy refreshments at a restaurant overlooking Dubrovnik and take advantage of some free time before boarding the cable car for the ride down to the Old City. Embarking your boat, sail towards the beach where you will enjoy your chance to relax and bask in the sunshine. En route, you will pass the island of Lokrum, the Fort of St. Lawrence and Dubrovnik’s City Walls. Built between the 12th and 16th centuries, the City Wall is approximately one-and-a-half miles long and boasts four fortresses and 33 bastions. The isle of Lokrum has its fair share of history as well. The first written record of Lokrum was in 1023 in connection with the founding of the Benedictine abbey and monastery. According to legend, Richard the Lion Heart was cast ashore here after being shipwrecked in 1192.

Arriving at the beach, swim in one of the cleanest seas in the world, sunbathe on the pebbled beach or just soak up the atmosphere from a comfortable spot in the shade. For your convenience and comfort, sun umbrellas and chaise lounges will be available.

Nothing goes better with a day at the beach like a light lunch to be served on the beach.

Returning to the Old City port by boat, you may explore Dubrovnik’s Old City on your own, with your guide indicating where to find your shuttle bus for your independent transfer to the pier and your Crystal ship.

Then it will be time to re-board your motor coach and venture to the Asimomitis winery and vineyards, a journey of approximately 30 minutes. On arrival, you will be welcomed by the vineyard’s owner and namesake, Mr. Asimomitis. Learn about his approach to winemaking, which incorporates not only an assessment of soil and weather conditions, but also the accompaniment of classical music. Indeed, Mr. Asimomitis believes that playing classical music to his wines improves the vintages’ flavor and character.

First up on your half-day’s explorations is your visit the ancient city of Magnesia.

While somewhat in the shadow of Ephesus in the minds of visitors, Magnesia is actually a highly significant site, both now in its ruined state and in its long history, which dates as far back as the 11th century BC. The first excavations were undertaken in 1891 by Carl Humann on behalf of the Berlin Museum. Work continued for 21 months, revealing a theater, a temple of Artemis with an altar, a temple of Zeus, and a prytaneion, or city hall. Artifacts discovered in Magnesia are exhibited in museums in Paris, Berlin and Istanbul.

After visiting the small and compact site, travel to nearby Sevilen Winery. Located in the area of Magnesia, one of the most important wine centers of ancient times, the winery has tapped roots that run deep in the region’s winemaking. The winery was founded in 1942 by İsa Güner, who after studying wines in France saw the great potential in Turkey for wine production. Today, the property is managed by the third generation of the Güner family.

During your visit to the winery and sampling of its fine vintages, you will come to appreciate why Sevilen Group’s wines have won international awards.

Raise a glass to a fine outing before returning to Kuşadasi, where you may either remain in town to enjoy free time or transfer directly to the pier.

After traversing a small, coastal mountain range, your air-conditioned motor coach will cross the wide Meander Valley.

Soon, you will reach the foot of Mt. Mykala and the 5th-century city of Priene. Walk uphill to the amazing ancient city, with geometric blocks of land that were the first recorded examples of organized city planning. Stroll along the paved streets, admiring the view of the cotton plantations in the valley below. Attractions here include the remaining columns from the Temple of Athena, the well-preserved theatre and the agora. Less visited than other sites near Kuşadasi, Priene retains a great deal of its ancient Greek heritage, which you can explore in relative solitude.

The next city you will experience is Miletus, a fascinating site for both its location and its former residents. Dramatically built upon a promontory, the ruined city once was home not only to explorers and traders but also to a significant intellectual community, including Anaximenes, who contemplated the heavens; Anaximander, the “father of geography”; and Thales, a pioneer in astronomy and geometry who calculated the height of the pyramids in Egypt by measuring their shadow. Yet another intellectual heavyweight was Hippodamus, perhaps one of the world’s first city planners, whose earliest work you can inspect here as you wander about Miletus’ organized, grid-like streets.

Your journey back through time continues as you set off through the Meander Basin to the former religious sanctuary of Didyma. During the afternoon, explore the Temple of Apollo, considered to be among the ancient world’s most sacred sites. The austere Medusa head at the sanctuary has become a symbol of the city.

Admire the impressive friezes and columns that were once only accessible to privileged mystics before walking to a nearby restaurant. Here, you will enjoy a simple Turkish lunch and savor views of the temple, which the eatery overlooks.

A long and rewarding day drawing to a close, rejoin your motor coach and return to Kuşadasi, where you may either remain in town to enjoy free time or transfer directly to the pier.

Important Notes: As this excursion involves extensive walking up and downhill and over uneven surfaces, it is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. At ancient Istanbul, you will view the Blue Mosque with its six landmark minarets. Pause before the magnificent St. Sophia Church and feel the excitement of bygone days at the Hippodrome, where chariots once raced and grueling battles were waged.

Next, pass the 4th-century walls of Old Town, which was completely destroyed during the conquest of the city. Then, continue to Aksaray Square, where you will view the Aqueduct of Valens, and 2nd-century waterways used to bring water into the city. The Prince Sehzade and Süleyman Mosques are visible.

Proceed across the Ataturk Bridge to Pera where you may view the Pera Palas Hotel where Agatha Christie and Ernest Hemingway once stayed. Then, while crossing the Bosphorus Bridges, view the Beylerbeyi and Ciragan Palaces. The fifth-largest spanning bridge from Europe to Asia, the Bosphorus Bridge is in fact two bridges: simply termed the First Bosphorus Bridge and the Second Bosphorus Bridge (the second bridge is known as the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge). Continue to Beylerbeyi to enjoy refreshments by the waterfront. Absorb the panoramic view of the city from this excellent vantage point.

Continuing past the Uskudar, Bosphorus Bridge and Beylerbeyi Palace, cruise along the Asian banks of the Bosphorus to the Asian side of the city. Take in a view of the Kucuksu Palace as a refreshing cup of tea or coffee is served onboard. Afterward, you may wish to explore this intriguing neighborhood on your own.

Then, cruise to the narrowest point of the strait and marvel at the European and Asian fortresses dotting the shoreline. View the second bridge on the Bosphorus, Conqueror's Bridge, which is the fourth largest suspension bridge on earth. Cruising along,  get a glimpse of beautiful Hidiv Palace and Gardens.

Reaching Emirgan town, view the Emirgan Gardens as you make your return along the European banks. Some of the sights you will see include Rumeli Hisar Fortress, Bosphorus University Campus high up on the hilltops, the wooden houses, mansions and villas of the Arnavutkoy district, the Ortakoy Mosque, Ciragan Palace and Dolmabahce Palace.

All too soon, your scenic cruise concludes as you disembark your boat and return to your Crystal ship through the bustling streets of Istanbul.

Board your air-conditioned motor coach and cross the Galata Bridge to the Old Town of Constantinople. It takes little effort to imagine thundering chariots and the cheers of excited spectators as you view the remains of the Byzantine Hippodrome. Rome’s great Circus Maximus inspired the huge square. You will also glimpse the pink granite Obelisk of Theodosius and the Serpentine Column, Istanbul’s oldest Greek monument.

Sultan Ahmet Camii, better known as the Blue Mosque, takes its nickname from the cerulean cast of its intricately tiled interior. Take a moment to view the impressive minarets that soar skyward. Then, remove your shoes at the mosque’s entrance and cross rich layers of carpet that have been donated by the Muslim faithful over the years.

Opposite the famous mosque is the ancient Basilica of St. Sophia. Now a museum, the great church was built by Constantine the Great and reconstructed by the Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. As you approach on foot, observe its immense dome, which rises to a height of 150 feet. For 1,000 years, this dome earned the distinction as the “world’s largest.” Frescoes and mosaics adorn its antique interior.

Next, drive to the Cagaloglu district of old town for some independent time to visit the open shops outside the Grand Bazaar.

After your fascinating exploration, remain at the Grand Bazaar for some independent exploration or re-board your motor coach for the return to your Crystal ship.

Important Notes: Please Note, for visits to Istanbul that fall on a Monday (v4314), St. Sophia will not be visited, as it is closed on Mondays; this site will be replaced with a visit to the Church of Chora. As this excursion involves extensive walking and standing for approximately 2 hours, it is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties, however guests using collapsible walkers can take this excursion. It is recommended that guests dress conservatively for their visit to the Mosque; no shorts or sleeveless shirts.  Ladies are required to cover their heads during mosque visits. It is also recommended that guests wear flat, comfortable shoes. Due to the popularity at the sights visited, crowding and lines may be expected. Your patience is appreciated.

The visit to the Grand Bazaar is not guided; it is designed only to offer guests an overview of this site and does not allow time for extensive shopping. Guests wishing to remain at the Grand Bazaar independently are kindly requested to advise their guide or ship’s escort before leaving the excursion. This excursion operates in all weather conditions. The order of sights visited may vary.
